Illegal drugs said to be headed to Joaquin stopped by Nacogdoches County authorities, two arrested

A Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s deputy made a stop on a pickup on US Hwy. 59 Wednesday evening and recovered almost $48,000 in crystal meth they believe was headed to Joaquin.

Arrested were 45-year old Jason Shinall of Joaquin and 21-year old Zachary Whitten of Grand Cane, La. They were taken into custody on a first-degree felony possession of a controlled substance.

After stopping the pickup, deputies could smell the odor of burnt marijuana, and the driver admitted having previously smoked the drug. When the men began acting nervous, the deputy received consent to search and allegedly found more than a pound of crystal meth inside the pickup.

Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s investigators believe the meth was destined for Joaquin.
