Local Sports Round up 12/8/14; Tenaha headed to another state semi-final game, Rider sub-varsity basketball teams come away with championship hardware

The Tenaha Tigers are headed to their fourth consecutive state semi-final appearance in the high school football playoffs after holding off Iola, 35-28 Friday night in the Class 2A, Div. II Region III Final in Tyler. (11-1) Tenaha will take on familiar foe (13-0) Bremond at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Nacogdoches at SFA’s Homer Bryce Stadium. Bremond defeated Bruni, 46-7 in LaVernia in the Region IV Final. The Tenaha-Bremond winner will play the Seagraves-Albany winner (game being played in Snyder Friday) for the 2A, Div. II State Championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington next week. This will be the 4th consecutive playoff meeting between Bremond and Tenaha.

John Tyler beat McKinney North, 64-40 to advance.

 

In basketball, it was a real good weekend for the Center sub-varsity teams, as both the JV & Freshmen Roughriders came away with the Tatum Tournament Championship trophies Saturday.

 

The JV Riders defeated Woden, Whitehouse and Marshall to make the championship game, where they beat Lindale, 46-34.

 

Meanwhile, the Freshmen Riders beat Central, Chapel Hill and Mt. Pleasant in the semi-final, and in the championship game, beat Marshall, 62-54.

In non-tournament varsity action Friday, Class 4A #23 Tatum defeats Class 2A #7 San Augustine, 63-48 and Chireno 72, Pollok Central 67.

 

Tuesday night’s basketball scheduled has the Center Lady Riders at home against Waskom.

 

There’s a battle of two state-ranked teams in San Augustine tomorrow night, as the Class 2A #7 ranked Wolves take on Class A #2 ranked Laneville in a 6 p.m. tip-off. The San Augustine Lady Wolves go to Cushing, Broaddus will be at Shelbyville to play the Dragons; the Timpson Bears and Lady Bears host LaTexo; the Joaquin Rams and Lady Rams go to Brookeland; Mt. Enterprise is in Tenaha playing the Lady Tigers; Woden heads to Garrison against the Lady Bulldogs and the Bulldogs will be at Groveton.

 

The SFA Lumberjacks defeated Long Beach State, 74-45 Friday and beat Ouachita Baptist, 84-60 yesterday to improve to 6-3 on the season.

 

The Ladyjacks are 5-3 after a 70-59 win Saturday over Rice.
