Local Sports Round up 12/3/14; Riders lose three in Marshall, #7 ranked SA wins

Basketball last night the Center Roughriders lost all three games, Freshmen, JV and Varsity at Marshall. Freshmen, 55-57, JV, 59-70, and Varsity, 71-90.

 

The #7-state ranked San Augustine Wolves beat Mt. Enterprise, 74-65; #20 ranked Douglass over the Joaquin Rams, 87-45; and the Martinsville Pirates beat Rusk in overtime, 32-29.

 

Girls: The Joaquin Lady Rams are defeated by Douglass, 45-37.

 

Most of our local basketball teams are playing in tournaments Thursday thru Saturday.

 

The Center Riders will be in Tatum, the San Augustine Wolves are playing in Huntington, the Timpson Bears, Lady Bears and Garrison Bulldogs are taking part in the Mt. Enterprise Tournament; the Joaquin Rams and Lady Rams will be in the Apple Springs Tourney; the Tenaha Lady Tigers will be playing in the Lipan Tournament, the Shelbyville Lady Dragons are in the West Sabine Tourney, and the Garrison Lady Bulldogs are in the Winona Tournament.

 

On Friday, the Shelbyville Dragons go to Broaddus where the Bulldogs will be celebrating homecoming.

 

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches released its weekly rankings Monday and the San Augustine Wolves remain No. 7 in Class 2A. In Class 3A, Central Heights is No. 19, Tatum is No. 23 in the Class 4A poll, and Laneville is No. 2 and Douglass No. 20 in Class A.

 

On the girls’ side of the state rankings, Chireno is No. 10 in Class A, and Tatum No. 19 in Class 4A.

 

San Augustine has two big early-season test this month. Laneville will be in town on Dec. 9, and Class 2A’s No. 2 ranked team, Martins Mill will take on the Wolfpack in SA Dec. 22.

 

The SFA Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks both take wins last night. The men upset Memphis, 64-52, and the ladies take a 90-50 win over A&M-Kingsville. The Jacks return home for a 7 p.m. tip-off Friday against Long Beach State. The Ladyjacks are in Houston to play Rice on Saturday.

 

At Panola College, the Ponies split a pair of games at the Guy Davis Classic at Angelina College last weekend. Panola opened with a loss to Southwestern Christian College, 72-81 last Friday, and came back Saturday to take a 101-60 win over Lone Star College-Tomball. The Ponies return to action at 7:30 p.m. tonight against the Texas Riders, and will be home Saturday at 6 p.m. against Angelina College. Home games are being played at Carthage High School.

 

Meanwhile, the Fillies are 8-3 on the season with back-to-back wins. Panola College beat Texas Storm, 79-29, Friday and took a 67-62 win over Arkansas Baptist College Saturday. The Fillies will be home at 4 p.m. Saturday against Angelina College at Carthage High School Gym.

 

The Tenaha Tigers will face Iola at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler in the Class 2A, Div. II Region III Football Final. The winner will advance to the state semi-final to take on the winner of the Region IV Final between (12-0) Bremond vs. (10-2) Bruni, Friday, 7:30pm, La Vernia. Tiger fans are reminded the Pep Rally will be at 2:40 p.m. Friday in the SEC. School will release at 3pm.
