Joaquin Fireman battle 10-acre grass fire Saturday, urge caution due to dead grass, gusty winds

Dead grass and gusty winds contributed to a fire that burned some 10 acres of pasture in less than 30 minutes near Joaquin Saturday afternoon.

The Joaquin Fire Dept. was dispatched to County Road 3341 off FM 139 just after 1 p.m. and found the fast moving fire fed by very thick, dead dry grass and pushed by 15 to 20 mph winds.

Stephen Ewing with the Joaquin Fire Dept. tells Center Broadcasting an unattended trash fire was the origin.

He said JVFD quickly contacted DeSoto Fire District #1 in Logansport to send an extra brush truck to help get the fire under control. The Texas Forest Service also assisted by cutting a fire lane around the burned area.

In addition to burning pasture, the flames threatened a barn and mobile home.

The Joaquin Fire Department reminds all citizens that due to the recent frosts and subsequent dry weather, fire danger can be high at times. He said to use caution when burning outdoors and refrain from burning on windy days.
