TxDOT encourages motorist to be safe during holiday travel

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is urging motorists to follow a few simple travel tips to help ensure safe travels for an enjoyable holiday. Lufkin TxDOT Spokeswoman Kathi White says, “Today and Sunday the roads will be crowded with holiday travelers so it's best to plan ahead and to use caution during travels."

he adds, “TxDOT committed to safety and we want all drivers to join us and commit to putting away all distractions to reach their destinations safely." She passes along some tips to consider before heading out:

  *   Be patient, allow enough time to reach your destination, and obey all traffic laws.

  *   Roads will be crowded, and this could lead to some aggressive driving on the part of other motorists. Be courteous in these situations and avoid bad driving actions that may make the situation worse i.e., road rage.

  *    Monitor the weather.

  *    Don't drink and drive!

  *    Buckle Up!

  *    Minimize distractions!

  *    On long trips, rest at a Travel Information Center to avoid drowsy driving.
