Local Sports Roundup--11/26/14; Riders open up basketball season with sweep of Central

The Center Basketball Roughriders tipped off their season last night at Roughrider Gym and swept Central in three games. The Varsity Riders came away with a 65-50 win, while in sub-varsity action, the JV take a 64-29 win, and freshmen win 51-18.

 

The Varsity Riders will be participating in the Burger King Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28th and 29th. Those games will be played at the Whitehouse High School gym.. On Friday, they will face Jacksonville at 6 PM and on Saturday they will play Lindale at 4:30 PM.

 

The Martinsville boys and girls basketball teams both take wins Tuesday over Centerville. The Pirates come away with a 64-38 decision, and the Lady Pirates get a 51-30 win.

 

On Friday, the Timpson Bears will be in Mount Enterprise with action tipping off at 5 p.m.

 

The Panola Fillies fell to Jacksonville Baptist College 70-61 last night in Carthage. The Fillies are now 6-3, and will be in action Friday at 5:00 PM against Texas Storm in Athens in the TVCC Thanksgiving Classic.

 

The Center Middle School Basketball games scheduled for Monday, Dec. 1st versus Carthage have had the following changes: Both Boys and Girls teams will travel to Carthage. The boys will play at the Carthage Middle School gym, and the girls will play at the Carthage High School gym. 

The (9-1) Tenaha Tigers will play (8-4) Normangee in a Class 2A, Div. II region semi-final football game at 6 p.m. Friday in Bullard.  The winner will get the winner of the other region semi-final between Iola and Chilton being played at 7 p.m. Friday in Bryan. There will be a spirit rally at 1 p.m. Friday in front of Tenaha High School.

SFA Lumberjack running back Gus Johnson was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, and QB Zach Conque was the Newcomer of the Year. Johnson became SFA’s all-time leading rusher in last Saturday’s win over Northwestern State.

 

SFA received an at-large bid to the 2014 FCS Playoffs. The Jacks will travel to the University of Northern Iowa for a 7 p.m. kick-off Saturday.
