Tenaha ISD superintendent issues warning to unruly Tiger fans

Dear Tiger Fans and Tiger Nation Members,

Once again your Tigers find themselves preparing during Thanksgiving Break for a playoff game after defeating a tough Hubbard team 40-26.  This year marks the 7th time in the last 8 years that the Tiger Football family has come together for a Holiday Football Playoff experience.   What an amazing and great run for our kids, our school, and our community at large, especially when you consider that in Tenaha’s bright and amazing football history that we have only been able to enjoy Thanksgiving football on seven other occasions outside of this current run.

As Superintendent, I am proud to be able to see what a successful program does to improve the overall culture of a school as well as enhance the learning experience for students by providing opportunities for growth that exist outside the classroom.  For Friday night after Friday night, the Tenaha Tiger Nation of fans have turned out in great numbers to celebrate the hard work and quality play of one of the state’s winningest and most successful programs.   Your continual and full throated support of our students is so greatly appreciated, and as this year’s playoff run continues, we need you more than ever.

However, as I write asking for the continued support of the great majority of fans, I am compelled to also mention the importance of the responsibilities of fans as well.   Too often, the emotions and pressure of high stakes playoff competition run high.  I am troubled by the fact that a great majority of our fans have had their experience dampened by the negativity of a select few.  In fact, some of the comments and behavior of these few fans were so negative and derogatory that I am reminded of my obligation to ensure appropriate fan behavior at extra-curricular events per the rules of the UIL.  Any fans who choose to direct negative or personal comments towards players, coaches, or the officials are hereby warned that this type of behavior will absolutely not be tolerated.

As Superintendent of Schools, I refuse to allow a few negative fans to tarnish what is and what has been another amazing season of Tiger Football.  The road to a championship is difficult and our team, our school, and our fans do not need to be burdened by those who wish to tear down as opposed to uplift the Tigers.

I have instructed Tenaha ISD Police Chief, David Jeter, and High School Principal, Judy Monroe, to execute the rules and responsibilities of Tenaha ISD in regards to fan behavior at sporting events as laid out by the University Interscholastic League.  Having an opinion, being a fan, criticizing a play are all part of the game.  However, personal and direct attacks against players, coaches, or officials, excessive negative comments, and general unruly behavior will result in your direct removal from the venue at which the Tigers are competing and could also result in your suspension from attending any other games or events at TISD for the remainder of the year.

Tiger Fans….. Your Tigers are playing on Thanksgiving….. Again!!!!!  Get your maroon on, get excited, get behind these great kids and make so much noise that no one will ever feel the ability to ruin your great experience.  It is a privilege for any school to enjoy such on-field success, and it is even a bigger privilege to serve these great kids and the many, many great supporters of TISD.

Go Tigers!!! Beat Normangee!!!!
