Tenaha ISD Robotics Teams do well at competition against larger schools

The Tenaha Robotics Teams recently travelled to Kilgore to compete in the Fall Robotics Competition. There were schools from all across East Texas present for the meet.

Our Tenaha teams competed against 1A to 5A schools and came home with several trophies.

The students were to build robots that could maneuver around the Amazon Forest. A few of the tasks the students had to complete were: navigate their robot on or around a river, collect monkeys out of a Kapok Tree, gather tree frogs, and gather seed pods. Our robotics program is designed to get children excited about science and technology and teach them valuable work and life skills.

The 4th and 5th Grade teams competed against 92 teams and the team of Kim Cave, Sarahi Flores, and Carlee Linebarger placed 1st and the team of Alex Tyner, Jay Samuels and Luke Ward placed 3rd. Also competing were: Addie Duncan and Pacy Rhodes. These teams have worked hard preparing for this contest. For the 4th and 5th graders this was the first time some of them competed and they did a great job.

The Middle School teams competed against 75 teams. Tenaha had four teams to place in the top ten. In 3rd place was the team of Kale Page, Jatorian Calloway, and Jared Tovar. In 5th place was the team of Jalynn Durbin, Kamari Gray, and Drew Henry. Placing 9th were: Wesley Fox and Andrew Tyner and finishing in 10th place was: Irvin Barona, Colton Kimbrough, and Eric Vazquez. Also competing were: Paige Estes, Colin Linebarger, Gracie Martinson, Guadlupe Sandoval, Zacc Smith, Banner Warr, and Destynee Washington

The High School teams competed against 72 teams from across the East Texas Area and the team of Jacob Samford and Miguel Mendoza finished in 2nd place. Also competing were: Bianca Davison, Ruben Hernandez, Bianca Ramirez, Merlid Sandoval, and Zoee Rogers.

Mrs. Farmer, robotics sponsor, stated that she is proud of her robotics students. These students have put in a lot of after school hours preparing for this contest and have been working hard. Our students have proved once again that they are the best. Robotics engages students in complex, strategic problem-solving and higher-order thinking—a set of skills that is a high priority for 21st century education.

Tenaha Schools would like to thank the parents of our robotic students for allowing them to participate in the program. We appreciate our students and their parents’ dedication to education.
