Timpson, San Augustine, Carthage and Logansport remain alive in the state high school football playoffs after first-round wins. Both Tenaha and West Sabine had opening round byes.
Meanwhile, the Shelbyville Dragons had their season end Friday when Ore City took a 46-0 bi-district win in New London. Ore City advances to play Alto this week. The Garrison Bulldogs lost to Franklin, 57-13 Thursday.
The Timpson Bears built a 37-7 lead, but had to hang on as they defeat Evadale, 45-39 in a Class 2A, Region III, Div. II game in Hemphill last Friday. Timpson advances to play Chilton at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Palestine in the area championship. Chilton had a first-round bye.
The Tenaha Tigers enter the Class 2A, Region III, Div. II playoffs Friday night as they have an area round game against Hubbard at 7:30 p.m. in Lindale. Hubbard beat Cumby, 56-0 in bi-district.
San Augustine will head to Troup Friday night to take on Centerville in a Class 2A, Region III, Div. I area round game. The Wolfpack took a 24-13 bi-district win over Harleton Thursday. Centerville had a first-round bye. Center Broadcasting will have the action on 925 KXXE and online at cbc-radio.com.
West Sabine will play Price Carlisle in an area round game at 7 p.m. Friday in Lufkin.
Carthage beats Little Cypress-Mauriceville, 10-0 in Lufkin. They’ll face off with El Campo Friday night in New Caney.
The Logansport Tigers pitched a shut-out at home against East Iberville in the first-round of the Louisiana state football playoffs, 48-0. They’ll head to DeRidder Friday night to play East Beauregard High School.
In high school basketball action Tuesday it will be Carthage at San Augustine to play the Lady Wolves; Cushing at Shelbyville to play the Lady Dragons; Tyler Grace at the Timpson Lady Bears; Garrison Lady Bulldogs at Beckville; and Gary will be at Broaddus for boys’ and girls’ action.
The SFA Lumberjacks men’s’ basketball program is taking part in ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon. SFA is the only Texas team to host a game. Tip-off is 8 a.m. Tuesday morning in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free before 7: 30 a.m. The game is with the University of Northern Iowa. ESPN2 will air the game.
Also, the SFA Women’s Volleyball team just wrapped up the season going 16-0 and will be the No. 1 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Panola College Ponies are now 2-4 on the season with a 73-54 win over El Centro College Saturday night at Carthage High School. The Ponies led throughout. Panola will take on Northwestern State JV at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Carthage High School. Home games are being played at Carthage High due to renovation work at Johnson Gym on campus. The Ponies are conducting a food drive for Thanksgiving, and fans are encouraged to bring canned goods and non-perishable items. Designated boxes for all items will be at the gym.
