Center City Council amends industrial sewage discharge ordinance, update received on MLK construction

At last night's Center City Council meeting, the governing body gave approval to an ordinance amending the Industrial Sewer Discharge Ordinance. City Manager Chad Nehring says with EPA standards higher than ever this will update the discharge allowances, enhance the ability to fine industrial discharges that violate maximum standards and establish monitoring standards for all customers, especially those with higher potential for metals in their waste stream.

The council accepted the Texas Department of Agriculture Texas Capital Fund Downtown Revitalization Grant Program, which offers grant funds toward projects to improve historic downtown with a match from the city.

In addition, city council approved the closure of streets for the annual parade from downtown to St. Therse Catholic Church on Dec. 12 in obervance of Feast of Our Lady Guadalupe; and approved the appointment of Joyce Mayberry to the Center Housing Authority Board, replacing Barbara Bittick, and the addition of Fern Thomas Jernigan, Jr. as a Center Police Dept. reserve officer.

Nehring added that the final sections of the MLK Drive reconstruction project should be installed this week, to allow for opening by the end of the month. He also said the Hutcherson Drive Center Motor Company street project should be going out for bids next week.
