Local Sports Roundup 10/29/14; Lady Rider Volleyball headed to state playoffs

The Center Lady Rider Varsity Volleyball team is headed to the state playoffs and will meet Carthage for the Bi-District Championship at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3 in Carthage.

 

The high school basketball season is just around the corner and several teams have been included on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ state rankings released Monday. The San Augustine Wolves are pre-season ranked No. 7 in the Class 2A poll, Laneville is No. 2 and Douglass No. 18 in Class A, Central Heights’ boys are No. 19 in the Class 3A rankings, and Tatum is No. 23 in the 4A poll. As for girls, the Chireno Lady Owls are No. 18 in Class A; and Central Heights is No. 9 in girls’ 3A.

 

The Center High School tennis team will head to the regional tournament in Willis on Friday and Saturday.

 

The Roughriders Cross Country team will be in Humble as well on Friday and Saturday for the regional tournament.

 

This week's Friday night high school football action, Center at Texarkana Pleasant Grove, San Augustine goes to Shelbyville in our Shelby County Game of the Week on Q-100 KQBB. Elsewherer, Joaquin at Cushing,  Timpson at Maud, Overton will be in Tenaha at 4 p.m. Saturday for the Tigers’ homecoming, Newton goes to Garrison, and Logansport goes to Northwood Lena.

 

In sub-varsity football Thursday, the Center Roughrider Freshmen/JV will combine for a final home game versus Texarkana Pleasant Grove at Roughrider Stadium at 5 p.m.

 

Meanwhile, the Center Middle School 7th Grade A team and 8th Grade A teams will go to Texarkana Pleasant Grove beginning at 4:30 p.m. The games are to be played at the high school stadium.

 

In other games Thursday, Shelbyville Jr. High and JV at San Augustine starting at 5 p.m.

 

Joaquin Jr. High and JV are home to play Cushing beginning at 5 p.m.

 

Timpson Jr. High at home to play Maud starting at 5 p.m.

 

Garrison Jr. High and JV go to Newton Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m.

 

The SFA Football Lumberjacks are ranked No. 24 in the Sports Network Football poll after their 27-17 win over No. 8 Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday. Lumberjack running back Gus Johnson was the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his 116 yards and two TDs. In addition, punter Nick Bruno was the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week. He averaged 46.2 yards and hit two 52-yeard punts. SFA will be at NRG Stadium in Houston Saturday for their annual Battle of the Pineywoods with Sam Houston State. Kick-off is 3 p.m.
