Center High School Homecoming events kick-off today

It's Homecoming Week at Center High School and the Homecoming Pep Rally is scheduled for 3 p.m. this afternoon, and the Riders will take on Atlanta in the Homecoming Game at 7:30 p.m.

The CHS Alumni Meeting will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Windham Civic Center, and the Homecoming Parade will be at 4 p.m. Saturday on the Center Square.

During Saturday’s CHS Alumni Meeting the 2014 Hall of Honor Award recipients Retha Renee Swindell from the Class of 1975, and J.W. (Jim) Braden of the Class of 1944 will be honored.

Ms. Swindell was a stand-out student athlete at Center High, setting a national and state record in the Triple Jump that stood for three years, and was awarded a prestigious Texas Achievement Scholarship to the University of Texas. While at UT she continued to make her mark on the basketball court where many of her records still stand. She was inducted into the University of Texas Women’s Athletic Hall of Honor in 2001. She was also selected as a member of the 1978 US Select Basketball Team, and as a 1977-78 Women's NIT All American. Ms. Swindell also played professional basketball in Chicago and Dallas.

Mr. Braden left Center and worked in the Oil and Gas industry which took him to places around the world before retiring and returning to Center. He was employed for 34 ½ years with Gulf Oil. Mr. Braden graduated Lon Morris Jr. College and then Hardin-Simmons University with a B.S. in Business Management and Economics. In 1986 he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Lon Morris, and has been a very active civic and community leader, including a Royal Arch Mason.

The student ministry of First Baptist Church of Center will sponsor a 5th quarter after the Center homecoming football game tonight. The event will go until midnight with food, fun and games. The 5th quarter is open to 7th thru 12 grade students in Shelby County and will be held at the Family Life Center and the big parking lot.
