Local Sports Round up 10/21/14; Rider Cross Country team wins district, tennis team at area today

The Center High School Cross Country Team traveled to Carthage Monday for the District Cross Country Meet and qualified six for the regional in Humble.

 

The Roughriders took first place as a team. The Varsity Boys claimed five of the top ten places and qualifying spots went to Roughriders, Giovani Angel who placed 1st, Arnol Escobedo, placed 3rd, Daniel Rodriguez placed 4th, Ruben Soto placed 7th, and Joel Rodriguez placed 8th. Varsity Lady Rider, sophomore Iliana Rojas, a first year team member, placed sixth out of the top ten and qualified for the Regional Meet in Humble, Nov. 1. The team is coached by Roque Palomino.

 

 

Also, the Rider Tennis Team beat Gladewater 10-2, and then Kilgore 10-2 Monday. The team is in Van today for the area championship. The Rider Tennis team is rated number 4 in the state. Rider Tennis is coached by Leon Dykes and Beth Nichols.

The Texas A.P. High School Football Rankings out Monday has the undefeated Shelbyville Dragons coming in at No. 13 this week in the Class 2A poll. The Tenaha Tigers are No. 18, while Alto is 8th. Refugio remains No. 1. In Class 3A, Cisco is still on top, while Corrigan-Camden is No. 4, Waskom 8th, Kirbyville at No. 12, and Newton 17th. In 4A, Navasota is No. 1, Gilmer No. 3, Van 8th, Gladewater 9th, Hardin-Jefferson 11th, Atlanta 15th, while Coldspring is 18th. The top team in 5A is Aledo, John Tyler No. 11, Longview 14, and Lufkin is 15th. Allen remains the No. 1 in Class 6A.

 

The local high school football district races are heating up, and this Friday night’s games could be the breaking point for many area teams if they have hopes of making post-season. The schedule includes: the Center Roughriders back home for their district home opener and homecoming game against Atlanta; the Shelbyville Dragons are home to play Beckville; the Tenaha Tigers go to the Timpson Bears; the Joaquin Rams are in San Augustine to play the Wolves; the Garrison Bulldogs go to Crockett; and St. Mary’s visits Logansport.
