Two Shelby County men recently competed in the National Dutch Oven Gathering cook-off in Monticello, Iowa and came away in second place.

Calvin Taylor of Shelbyville and Bill Philipp of Joaquin, who both cook with the Toledo Bend Chapter at Boles Field monthly, had to cook 3 courses-yeast bread, main course and dessert, using Dutch ovens and charcoal for heat.

Taylor and Phillip said they were competing with temperatures in the mid 40s, along with rain and wind that made the project a challenge. They report they lost out by just 3 point to the world champions.
