Woman shot dead in Tyler County following deer lease dispute, suspect charged with murder

In Tyler County a woman was shot dead over a dispute involving a deer lease near Woodville late Sunday afternoon.

Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford said 42-year old Melanie Shoemaker of the Austin area brought a rifle to 50-year old John McDowell's house because she was upset over a deer lease.

Shoemaker reportedly left on a four-wheeler, with McDowell following her on another ATV.

McDowell is said to have shot Shoemaker in the cheek with a pistol on the road near his house.

A justice of the peace ordered an autopsy of the victim.

John McDowell has been charged with first-degree felony murder.

It’s reported Shoemaker was upset at McDowell for tearing down another man’s deer stand and feeder.
