Local Sports Round up 10/7/14; Don Wall's Coaches' Show airs tonight on Q-100

It's Tuesday, and Don Wall's Shelby County Coaches' Show airs from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening on Q-100 KQBB and online at cbc-radio.com.

 

The AP Texas High School Football Rankings are out heading into Week 5, and the Tenaha Tigers and Shelbyville Dragons are both hovering below the Top 10 in Class 2A. Tenaha is No. 14, followed by Shelbyville at No. 15. Alto is No. 9, with Refugio and Mart still holding on to No. 1 & 2 respectively. In Class 3A, Cisco is No. 1, with Corrigan-Camden hanging in at No. 4, Kirbyville #6, and Waskom at No. 9. Elsewhere, Arp is No. 12, Newton No. 14. In 4A, Navasota remains No. 1, with Center district opponents Gladewater No. 9 and Atlanta at No. 10. In Class 5A, Aledo is on top, with John Tyler No. 5 and Lufkin No. 10. Longview is 22, and Nacogdoches has dropped out after last wee's loss to Ennis. Allen is No. 1 in 6A.

 

All local teams will be involved in district action this Friday night. The Center Roughriders will kick-off Dist. 6 4-A, Div. II in Longview at Spring Hill, the Joaquin Rams go to the Shelbyville Dragons in our Shelby County Game of the Week on Q-100, KQBB, the Tenaha Tigers go to Maude, the Timpson Bears head to Mt. Enterprise, the San Augustine Wolves travel down to West Sabine, and the Garrison Bulldogs open district at Hemphill. Meanwhile, LaSalle will be in Logansport.

 

In volleyball, the Center Lady Riders have their district home opener today against Diboll starting at 5 p.m., while the Timpson Lady Bears are observing Senior Night as they host Carlisle in a district match. he No. 4 Lady Bearcats lived up to their reputation Friday with a 25-8, 25-3, 25-10 sweep against Timpson.

 

In sub-varsity football Thursday, the Center Middle School 7th and 8th Grade A&B teams will be playing in Longview Spring Hill. Both 7th and 8th Grade B Teams will begin at 4:30. The 7th and 8th Grade A teams will proceed as normal after the conclusion of the B teams.

 

The Center Freshmen and JV Roughriders will combine to play Longview Spring Hill at Roughrider Stadium on Thursday, October 9th. The game begins at 5:00 PM.

 

The Tenaha Junior High will host Maud Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.

 

The Joaquin JH/HS cross country team was well represented in the CASA 5K Chicken Run. Freshman, Justin Bailey won his division with a time of 19:48.5 and Freshman Day'za Lane placed 2nd in her division with a time of 23.43.0.  Other team members representing Joaquin and posting their personal best times were:  Tre Burns 22.29.1, Lorenzo Lane 23.016, Malori Belrose 25.53.2, Sawyer Matthews 27.16.9, Anna Rodriguez 27.19.9, Kathy Foley 29.11.6, and Jykerria Patton 37.03.8.  The Rams travel to West Sabine tomorrow, Wednesday to participate in their next cross country meet.
