Local Sports Round up 9/29/14

In last Friday’s high school football results, the Center Roughriders wrapped up non-district, losing to Hardin-Jefferson, 49-18, giving Center a 2-2 record heading into district. The Shelbyville Dragons are the lone undefeated team in the county, as they’re 4-0 after a 46-6 whipping of Queen City. The Joaquin Rams improve to 2-2 with a 36-6 win over Groveton. In a battle of two state-ranked teams, it was Alto besting Tenaha, 72-21, dropping the Tigers to 3-1. Timpson is 0-3 with a 35-14 loss to Lovelady, and San Augustine finishes non-district with a 57-6 victory against Hemphill. The Wolves are 2-2.

 

Saturday night, Marlin scores late to beat Garrison, 34-32 in Palestine to drop Garrison to 2-1, and Gilmer takes a 58-21 win over Carthage in Longview.

 

Elsewhere Friday, Logansport loses to Plain Dealing, 30-23, Nacogdoches has Lufkin’s number, 38-35 in a Dist. 16-5A opener, West Sabine over Deweyville, 40-20, Union Grove beats Beckville, 35-14, Chapel Hill over Tatum, 42-39, Hallsville defeats Marshall, 21-19, Henderson over Daingerfield, 49-7, Kilgore loses to Gladewater, 25-21, John Tyler upends Whitehouse, 52-17, Longview over Pine Tree, 66-13, Evadale hands Cushing their first loss, 27-21, Mt. Enterprise over Cross Roads, 62-14, Carlisle beats Overton, 41-6, and Atlanta takes Liberty Eylau, 56-27.

 

Week 6 football, there’s not much local action scheduled as most teams are in bye weeks before the start of district play. The only Shelby County teams playing are Joaquin and Timpson, and they happen to be playing one another Friday night in Timpson. That’ll be our Shelby County Game of the Week on Q-100, KQBB. Logansport will travel to Ringgold Friday night to open district in the only other local game.

 

The Center Roughriders have a bye before the start of district Oct. 10, the Shelbyville Dragons also have an open date and will kick-off district hosting Joaquin next week, and the Tenaha Tigers have an open date, before starting district play at Maude Oct. 10. The Joaquin Rams will travel to Timpson to play the Bears Friday night in the last non-district game for both. The San Augustine Wolves have an off week and will start district next week at West Sabine, and the Garrison Bulldogs are off and will open district Oct. 10 at Hemphill. The Logansport Tigers travel to Ringgold Friday night to open district.

In volleyball, the Lady Riders open district tomorrow at Huntington, while the Timpson Lady Bears are home to play Overton in a district match.
