Joaquin ISD voters to cast ballots Saturday for Tax Ratification Election, district facing cuts if issue fails

Joaquin ISD voters will go to the polls Saturday for a Tax Ratification Election.

The Joaquin ISD Board is giving voters the opportunity to restructure the district's current tax rate by adopting a rate just over 2-cents less than the previous year.

Superintendent Phil Worsham said the adopted tax rate would allow JISD to receive additional state funding without increasing local property taxes. He said without the revenue increases, maintaining the same level of programs and educational standards for Joaquin ISD students would not be possible.

With taxpayer support or "ratification" the tax rate formula increases the taxes assessed on the operations side and lowers the taxes on the debt payment side which would trigger an increase in funding for operations of $400,000.

Polling locations include the Joaquin ISD Administration Building and the Huxley Volunteer Fire Department. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow.

Any questions concerning the Joaquin ISD Tax Ratification Election should be directed to Worsham at 269-3128.

By the way, 155 ballots were cast during early voting.
