Unemployment up slightly, but better than 2013

The Texas Workforce Commission released the July jobless numbers Friday, and Shelby County’s unemployment rate is up slightly from June, from 5.7 to 5.9 percent. July’s rate is the highest since 5.9 in March. A year ago, the unemployment was 7.1 percent in Shelby County. Although the local rate is above the statewide number of 5.1 percent, it’s below the national unemployment rate of 6.2 percent.

In San Augustine County, the July jobless rate is 8.2, up from 7.8 in June of this year, but better than the 10.2 in July 2013.

Sabine County continues to have one of the highest unemployment rates in the region, at 11 percent.

Other neighboring counties: Nacogdoches, 6 percent; Angelina, 5.5 percent and Panola, 4.2 percent.

The statewide job growth is led by professional and business services, ranging from legal services, to security guards to landscaping.
