Tenaha Council names new city park for former businessman, council member McNeill

At their meeting Monday night, the Tenaha City Council voted to name the new city park in honor of a long-time civic and business family.

The McNeill Family Park will be located downtown, on the vacant lot next to the former city hall building on Center Street.

According to City Secretary Doyce Bailey, a portion of the property to be used was donated to the city by the Dave McNeill family. McNeill was a business owner in Tenaha, running McNeill Drug Store, and served on the city council from 1914 to 1926, and was Mayor from 1926 to 1945. Plans are to put a fence around the property, and add some other features.

Mayor Orinthia Johnson advised the council decided at the meeting after discussion with the city's utility consultant Stacy Cranford, to place city employee Wes Wheeler on 6-months probation, change his job title to waste water operator and make him an hourly employee.

Tenaha City Council also decided to place an ad for a deputy city marshal position. Marshal Jimmy Wagstaff has been the lone peace officer for the city since taking over the position last year.
