VFW Post accepting donations to assist local veteran, elderly father with housing

Efforts are underway in Shelby County to assist a local veteran and his father who are currently living in almost homeless conditions, get a replacement trailer to call home.

Shelby County Memorial VFW Post 8904 Quartermaster Larry Hume says the men are living in a trailer without windows or heat and says it shouldn’t be inhabited.

Hume said the VFW is asking for help from county businesses and citizens to donate to the goal of $10,000, which would purchase a replacement trailer, clear the current lot and install a new structure.

He adds Shelby County Veterans Service Officer Sherry Riley brought the need to the post’s attention.

Hume said the man served in Iraq and was honorable discharged in 2007 with a disabling (back) injury, which has kept him from steady work.

He noted Ms. Riley’s been working to assist him get more disability funding from the VA.

Hume says donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1024 in Center, or you can call him at 598-2976.
