Sports Round-up 7/3/14

The Douglass Indians’ state championship baseball season has put the program into the national spotlight. Douglass won the Class A State Championship in a 32-1 season, and finished the season ranked 13th in a national poll for small high schools conducted by Jim Stout of CBS MaxPreps.

 

Just a reminder, a former all-state baseball player at Central Heights, with family ties to San Augustine, will be participating in the 2014 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby in Omaha, Nebraska tonight. Hunter Haley has just completed his second season at Oklahoma, and will take part in the fifth annual event that will be broadcast on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. this evening. Haley will be one of eight college players taking part in the competition. Hunter Haley’s parents are Richard and Kathy Chumley Haley, originally of San Augustine.

 

The Center Youth Baseball Association will be hosting a number of state tournaments at the Center Youth Baseball Park beginning this weekend. Games will start this Saturday for the 8-year old and under Machine Pitch and Machine Jr. Pitch State Tournaments, as 21 teams will be playing July 5-8; in addition, the Dixie Boys’ 14-year old and Dixie Boys’ Jr., 13-year old event is held with 15 teams starting Saturday. Then, July 12 thru 15, the 10-year old AAA South and AAA Jr. South Regional Tournament will be played with 17 teams involved; as well as the 12-year old Major Tight Base Tournament; and the District 9-year old and 10-year old Tournament with six teams.
