Campbell's Texas Football picks Center fifth in new district, Tenaha to win it all in 2A

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine hit the newsstand Friday, as the bible of Texas Football makes its preseason predictions for the upcoming season. With the formation of a Class 6A division, high school teams have for the most part moved up in classification, and realigned into one of two divisions—Div. I for the larger enrollment schools, and then Div. II. As for local teams, the Center Roughriders are now in District 6-4A, Division II, and according to the magazine, The Riders are predicted to finish fifth in the six-team district. Ahead of Center is projected district champ Gladewater, then Tatum, Atlanta and Spring Hill.

The Tenaha Tigers are getting the nod from Texas Football to not only win District 11-2A, Div. II, but to take all the marbles, and claim another state championship. Tiger running back Cobe Caraway is also the preseason state-wide MVP, and linebacker DeMarcus Perry is a pre-season all-state pick, and head coach Terry Ward is the pre-season coach of the year in 2A. Tenaha finished 2013 as 1A, Div. II semifinalist. The Timpson Bears are picked to finish third in the six-team member Dist. 11-2A, Div. II, behind Maud.

One of the toughest 2A districts in the region is 10-2A, Div. I, as San Augustine, Shelbyville and Joaquin are picked respectively behind West Sabine. San Augustine quarterback Jamikel Roberts is the pre-season district MVP. In District 11-3A, Div. II, which is another tough one, Garrison is predicted to finish third behind Newton and Corrigan-Camden.

The football season is scheduled to kick-off Aug. 29.

Over 130 high school students from all over the state and region gathered on Lake Sam Rayburn yesterday for The Sam Rayburn National High School Open Bass Tournament. Winning the rain-drenched event was the team of Dillion Harrell and Brendon Reavis of New Caney, with a total weight of 21 pounds, including a big fish of 7 pounds.
