San Augustine enters into garbage contract, agrees to combine election process

The City of San Augustine has officially gotten out of the garbage business.

At Tuesday night’s meeting, the city entered into a contract with Piney Woods Sanitation from Huntington to be the city’s new household and business garbage collector.

City Manager Bruce Milstead said Piney Woods will begin operating in San Augustine June 30, and until they can deliver the 95-gallon wheeled carts for customers, they’ll pick up garbage as the city has been. Milstead said the move will be cost effect for the city.

San Augustine Council voted to approve an election services agreement with San Augustine County Election’s Administrator Deborah Woods to take over the city’s election process. Ms. Woods was already taking care of the county and school’s elections. The shared cost of workers is a savings, according to Milstead.

He also said the DETCOG Economic Development Committee would be meeting with city officials in San Augustine today to discuss funding for a new fresh water holding tank and repairs to the existing facility. Milstead said estimated costs for the job, based on 2008 figures is around $700-thousand.
