Sales Tax Revenues up slightly in Center, Joaquin and San Augustine

Sales tax revenues for local municipalities have been varying as retail sales have been on somewhat of a roller coaster in the past few months.

In the City of Center, the June check from the state comptroller’s office is up almost three percent from a year ago. Center’s payment is $222,766 this month, which City Manager Chad Nehring says it’s hoped that trend will continue through the Summer.

He added shopping locally is important not only does it help local businesses, but also provides the sales tax funds that are used annually to improve and upgrade streets and roads, reduce local property taxes and assist in continued business and industrial development of the city.

Elsewhere in the county, the city of Joaquin’s June payment is up over 16 percent to almost $19,000; while Timpson’s is down over 18.5 percent to $14,000; Tenaha is down slightly to $4,600; and Huxley’s has seen a decrease of almost 64 percent to $377.

The City of San Augustine’s June check is up 55 percent for a payment of almost $30,000, and Broaddus is down over 31.5 percent to $1,600.

In other neighboring cities, Nacogdoches’ is up over 18 percent; Garrison is down 16 percent; and Hemphill is up almost 14 percent.
