Two rounds of rain, storms hit area within 24 hours

We had a double dose of rain and storms come through the deep East Texas and Western Louisiana area in the past 24 hours, thankfully the thunderstorms packed more of a bark than bite. Heavy rain, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and some occasional gusty winds over 30 mph were the main weather features. The only warning that came from the activity was a Flash Flood Warning that was issued by the National Weather Service in Shreveport at 2 a.m. this morning for San Augustine and Sabine counties, which expired at 6 o’clock. Weather Service Radar detected flash flooding from thunderstorms containing very heavy rainfall over the warned area with hourly rates in excess of two inches per hour, which continued to train across the warned area. Most of the warned area had already received two to four inches from Monday’s rain.

The weather system that came through the area yesterday not only brought us another good dose of rain, but electrical outages as well. Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative reported Monday afternoon they experienced weather-related outages in Shelby, San Augustine, Sabine and Nacogdoches Counties. Co-op Communications Specialist Brittany Johnson said approximately 500 members were without power in Shelby County around 3 p.m. She added the co-op appreciated the patience and understanding of customers during the time.

We told you yesterday DETEC had a major outage over the weekend, primarily in Nacogdoches County. Miss Johnson reported to us Monday that around 5,900 electrical customers were affected by the 12-hour outage in Garrison, Central Heights, Martinsville and Shady Grove areas of Nacogdoches County when an insulator failed on a mail transmission line around 4 p.m. Saturday.
