Sports Round up 5/30/14; New 1A, 2A Softball Champs Crowned

At the UIL State Softball Tournament yesterday the Class 1A state championship game and 2A championship games were played, as defending state champ, Weimar takes a 4-3 win over Harleton in the 1A title game, while Crawford grabs the 2A championship with a 5-3 win over East Bernard.

 

In the Class 3A semi-finals it was Van beating Snyder, 15-13, and LaGrange-Huffman Hargrave. The 3A Final is at 10 Saturday.

 

Today’s tournament action has the Class 4A semi-finals, as Barbers Hill v. Ennis at 9 a.m.; and Aledo v. Buda Hays at noon. The Class 5A semis have Lubbock Coronado v. Deer Park at 3 p.m. and The Woodlands v. San Antonio Southwest at 6 p.m. The 4A final is at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the 5A final at 4 p.m.

 

As for the boys,

 

At the Class 1A Region III Final best-of-three baseball series last night in Kilgore, despite a rain delay, No. 1 state-ranked Douglass throws a shutout at defending state champion Price Carlisle, 7-0. Game 2 will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin. The winner moves on to the state baseball tournament in Round Rock next week.

 

The 3A Region III Final in Houston last night saw College Station come away with a 9-1 over Silsbee. College Station has been ranked No. 1 most of the season. They move on to the state tournament next week.

The 2A Region III Final has Salado vs. Troy in Belton at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

 

The annual Preston Football Camp will be held Saturday, June 7 at Roughrider Stadium. The camp hours are from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information, contact Dwight Preston at 598-2470.

 

The 22nd annual Darren Wilson Golf Classic will be held Saturday, June 14th at Center Country Club. This annual tournament is held to raise funds that go to the Darren Wilson Scholarship Fund. The event has raised over $140,000.00 to benefit area students. There will be a large silent auction during the day long event as part of the fundraiser. The format of the one day affair will be a six man scramble. There is a fee of $80 per player. This fee covers the green fee, eight iron shot off one of the par 5 holes. Lunch will be cooked and served by the Shelby County Cookers before the tournament kicks off. You better hurry and get signed up.
