TxDOT announces road projects to start this week, weather permitting

TxDOT says there are several road projects planned to start over the next week in Shelby and San Augustine County that motorist should be mindful of during their travels. Here is a list of some of the projects this week, weather permitting.

Shelby County:
TxDOT contractor, Drewery Construction Company, is scheduled to begin a $5.5 million project to reconstruct a portion of U.S. 84 in Shelby County starting Wed., May 28, weather permitting. The project stretches from the Rusk County Line to U.S. 59 in Timpson. Motorists should be prepared for various changes during the work which is expected to take about a year to complete.

San Augustine County:
TxDOT contractor, Clark Construction, of San Antonio, continues to apply seal coat to roadways throughout the Lufkin District. This week, weather permitting, operations are tentatively set to move to U.S. 96 in San Augustine County. TxDOT’s preventative maintenance program is a two-step seal coat process that covers an existing roadway with a layer of hot asphalt followed by rock. The process seals the roadway to keep water out thereby adding years of life and requiring less maintenance while providing a new driving surface for motorists.

Drivers are reminded to expect short delays and day time lane closures in the work locations.

Remember to slow down, be patient and pay attention in these new work zones as well those that are currently under way. This means there could be intermittent lane closures or merging traffic so allow extra time to reach your destinations. Look for flaggers and signage to assist you in your drive through work zones. Remember, traffic fines double when workers are present.
