Local Sports Round up 5/23/14

The 22nd annual Darren Wilson Golf Classic will be June 14th at the Center Country Club. This annual tournament is held to raise funds that go to the Darren Wilson Scholarship Fund. During the past 21 years, over $140,000.00 has been raised to benefit our area students. There will be a large silent auction during the day long event as part of the fundraiser. The format of the one day affair will be a six man scramble. There is a fee of $80 per player. This fee covers the green fee, eight iron shot off one of the par 5 holes. Lunch will be cooked and served by the Shelby County Cookers before the tournament is kicks off. You're encouraged to sign up early to ensure a spot in the tournament. The annual Preston Football Camp will be held Saturday, June 7 at Roughrider Stadium. The camp hours are from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information, contact Dwight Preston at 598-2470.

 

The 61st annual Shelby County Sheriff’s Posse PRCA Rodeo is June 6 & 7 at 7:30 each night, sponsored by Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Presale tickets are $5, and can be purchased at Boles Feed, Triple J Feed and Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Center. Kids 6 and under get in free. There will be a calf scramble each night for kids 10 and under with cash prizes. On Saturday night only, anyone wearing a western hat will receive $1 off their admission ticket at the gate. Entertainment will be provided by three different East Texas Equestrian Drill Teams. The Rustlers, the 4-8 year olds; The Young Guns, the 8-14 year olds; and The Roughriders, age 15 & up.

 

High School baseball playoff action:

 

The No. 1 state-ranked team in Class 1A, Douglass defeated Harleton, 3-0 last night in Kilgore in Game 1 of their region semi-final series. Game 2 will be at 5 tonight at Driller Park in Kilgore. If necessary, Game 3 would follow. The winner will advance to play the Price Carlisle/Evadale winner in the region final next week.

 

The Price Carlisle/Evadale regional semifinal is a one-game playoff to be played at 6:30 tonight at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin.

 

In the Class 3A region semi-finals, Silsbee shows no mercy on Caldwell, as they take a 22-9 win last night in Game 1 of their best-of-three series in New Caney. Game 2 is at 7 tonight. The series winner has the College Station/Huffman Hargrave winner in the region final next week.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs will play Troy in a Class 2A state baseball regional semi-final series starting tonight in College Station. Game 1 of that series will be at 7 p.m. at A&M Consolidated, with Game 2 at 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner will move on to the Region Final against the Central Heights/Salado winner.

 

The Central Heights-Salado 2A regional semi-final series will start tonight in Franklin. Game 1 is at 7 p.m., with Game 2 at noon Saturday.
